‘All those little things – make sure you do them’: Guruzeta’s journey from gurney to goals with Athletic Bilbao

Whenhe initial occasion the Athletic striker featured in England, an young playing for the reserve team against Bundesliga youth at Wycombe’s stadium in September 2015, he hit the target. During his subsequent match he took the field in British turf, against Sunderland following that, he netted. Another occasion, against Manchester City soon after, well, he did it once more. When he returned to the northwest to play against the Red Devils at the sports complex in the 2017 season, he did it once more. It was a superb volley, too. “In fact,” he states, “it ranks among my finest I’ve netted.” Thus the club did their duty: he was replaced.

“I got well angry,” the Athletic striker reveals, then chuckling. “I’m sure there’s footage. We traveled to face United and I performed well. I wasn’t allowed to feature the second half: my contract wasn’t finalized deal, I kept finding the net, speculation was rife, you know how it is. I don’t know about interest from Newcastle, but I remember reading about Manchester United, the usual talk. It’s unclear the validity, but even if they had called, I’d have chosen to stay at the club. I’m fortunate to be here.”

Real Sociedad ease tension with bizarre win in unique Basque clash

At the facility, the city, the early training is set to begin; following that, the quick travel to Loiu airport and another trip to England, on this occasion to play Newcastle in the European elite competition on the upcoming match. Mentioning that phrase brings a smile to his face. It has become a tough year for Athletic, partly because of the demands of their participation. Defeated late on in the local rivalry, they have won only one of their last eight matches and fallen to the Gunners and Dortmund in European competition. Yet, look at the overall situation, the memorable evenings and those that lie ahead, and he feels a calm gratitude from him.

In the the period since he had returned to the club, the striker has been a semi-final participant, prevented from reaching a final at home by Manchester United, and has traveled on a traditional boat up the Nervión estuary accompanied by a huge crowd after lifting the trophy, the first title in 40 years. Currently he stands as Athletic’s top scorer in the Champions League, where they are distinctive and debuting in a decade. “I never imagined this,” he says.

Guruzeta thought it challenging enough just to break into the senior squad and his assessment was correct. The son of the former Real Sociedad player the former professional and a regular attendee at the opposition side, Gorka is from the Antiguoko academy, the local academy that developed Mikel Arteta, the legendary midfielder and Andoni Iraola. His move to Athletic came at seventeen but after his top-level debut in August 2018, he suffered a ACL injury, being released, a relegation and a recall before he could finally secure an opportunity, making his comeback to live the best days of the club’s history.

Gorka Guruzeta in training
Gorka Guruzeta aims to take on Newcastle in the European competition.

“Joining the setup thinking you won’t reach the first team but each step you advance through you’re persisting and you can notice the proximity. You get there but … departure is necessary.” He featured briefly in six matches in six games between his debut and February 2019. “And then I go back down to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. Five, six games at that level and I tear my cruciate.

“A severe disappointment but In retrospect as a beneficial experience because it forced me to alter the outlook. The rehabilitation process is challenging, but it’s beneficial. You adopt practices you didn’t have. It’s not about neglect, but I attended practice and then return home, as a youngster does. At the complex, facilities are comprehensive, so do everything. Work, precaution. Strength training. If your hips aren’t balanced, work on that. Assuming ankle mobility is good, improve it more. All the minor details: perform them.

“Among professionals you’re going to crash into players who have been in battles countless occasions. They’re so strong. Reviewing old images: I had slender legs. So what happens, happens. Current photos and the improvement is clear. The setback taught me. Practice concludes, but further effort is needed. Teammates are set, really ready; you have to be too.”

Game time is essential. Guruzeta departed upset in that year, in his early twenties, moving to a lower level. With Sabadell in the 20-21 campaign, he got three strikes in 40 games. During his Amorebieta stint in the second half of 2021-22, the he found his form. “Players go through it: transfers, releases. Should you reverse it, effort, faith, and when eventually a vacancy arises in your position, a return could happen. You have to be ready. When the opportunity came, it was a dream come true. The trophy success, play in Europe, and reach the Champions League … pfff.”

No wonder he says savor the moment. Especially after the previous season which, sometimes, was involved suffering. From top scorer with a high tally, last season he got seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
